Back to School Morning Routine
With school either starting back for some of your kids or just officially starting for others, it’s important to establish a morning routine.
A morning routine will allow your child to feel ready and prepared to learn each morning. More than just feeling prepared they will actually BE prepared. Wide awake, well fed and eager to learn. In addition, a morning routine will allow you to keep your sanity and start your own day on the right track.
So how to decide what to include in your back to school morning routine?
First, you want to decide what needs to be done each morning.
Clearly getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth all need to make the list.
You also need to decide that other personal things you want to do prior to leaving each morning. Will you want to get your morning cleaning done prior to leaving? Will you want to get your bible study done? Get a workout in?
Whatever you decide you want to include, calculate a reasonable amount of time for each task and make sure that its doable before leaving your house each morning.
I would love to say that I could get all of those aforementioned tasks done before taking my daughter to pre-k each day. However, if I add in a 30 min workout, 30 min bible study, an hour of cleaning, breakfast and getting everyone ready each morning I would be waking up at 5am. I can assure you that I am NOT a 5am kind of mom.
So be realistic. Don’t create a routine that you will never be able to adhere to. It will just make you feel like a failure and you are not a failure. In fact, if you are even thinking of creating a morning routine that just proves your will to succeed.
If you are a morning person and can absolutely get all those done prior to leaving each day, more power to you. If you take a look at your life and like me, you know that there is no version of reality that will let you get all that accomplished then don’t set yourself up for failure by pretending.
You have a whole day to get everything done. Just because other moms show up flushed from their morning run doesn’t mean that’s what you should be doing.
My personal plan… I’ll be dropping my big girl off at pre-k and driving the to Y where they will watch my little one while I get a workout, bible study and maybe even a little blogging in! Everyone wins!
When you are creating a back to school morning routine you want to start with simple
Start with simple. Add in things to your routine that will give you the most bang for your buck without overwhelming your whole morning.
Throw in your first load of laundry, unload the dishwasher and make your bed. No that is not all your morning chores BUT when you get back home and those three things are done it gives you a great starting point for the rest of them.
Free Up Your Days & Spend Less Time Cleaning
Make a simple breakfast, or better yet, prepare something the night before. Overnight oats, smoothies, and pre-made muffins are great.
If you are packing lunches do as much prep work the night before.
Get everyone’s clothes out the night before. Have your little ones be responsible for getting themselves dressed in the morning. A child in pre-k is perfectly capable of getting dressed.
Start your before school morning routine with positivity
Sitting in church on Sunday our preacher talked about how everyone has their own different kinds of weird. He, being a late night kind of person mentioned how weird it is that people wake up bright-eyed and ready to go each morning. He said he wakes up each morning thinking “WHHHYYYY, that totally could have lasted a lot longer!” My husband is the same way. Total Oscar the Grouch every morning and honestly I would rather he just hide out somewhere until he was fully awake and in a better mood.
Me, I wake up ready to go each morning. Well, I did before this pregnancy which has been sucking all the life and energy from me. But that’s another story.
Here’s the thing though, even if you aren’t a morning person I beg you to TRY and not let your negativism spew over onto your little ones in the morning. If that means waking up 15 min early each day to get yourself in a better mood DO IT. Don’t let that negative spread to your kids who are going out into the world. Don’t send them out the door every day with the memory of mommy having been tired, ill and snapping at everyone.
So if you need time to be a happier person, work that into your time schedule.
