People are always telling busy moms that they need to take time for themselves. Honestly though, who has the time? We are busy with life and life doesn’t have built in self-care breaks.
Taking time for yourself is important though so how do we find the balance? As busy moms, we do have the ability to incorporate our children into our self-care routines. We are with them ALL THE TIME so it makes more sense to include them instead of trying to build in time when we can exclude them.
While I do love my alone time, I also know that it’s not something I am going to get very often. I have two girls under 4 and another little surprise on the way. My husband’s job requires extensive travel and he is usually only home 2-3 days per week. I can’t just force alone time into that kind of schedule.
Instead, I try to include my little ones into my self-care routine when I can. It really ends up being way more enjoyable than a forced alone time situation that my lifestyle currently can’t afford.
Creating a fun or relaxing self-care situation and including your child ends up being really rewarding. Purposeful time spent with your child, in any task will be something they remember forever.
I really love face masks and for the longest time, I refused to let my daughter participate based on the idea that it was an adult thing. Once I broke down that thought hurdle and started letting her play along with me we really started to create some wonderful memories.
She loves pampering sessions with mommy and asks for that special time with me on a regular. And who am I to turn down a facemask?
Intentional Pampering Session
Another hurdle to self-care is that moms will often blame the lack of time on not taking care of themselves. Sure we can find time to make it to dance, gymnastics and t-ball but we can’t fit in a 20 min bubble bath!
When you include your children in your pampering session (or whatever self-care event you are planning on) somehow it ends up easier to find the time. It ends up being a planned activity and is less easy to skip.
Teaching Self Value
Self-esteem, self-important, self-love, self-care. These are things that we want to show and teach our children but do we even really know how?
I can tell my girls these things are important all day long but if they aren’t seeing me put it into practice how will they really understand?
For a while, every time I put something on besides yoga pants my oldest would ask where we were going. I hated that. I hated that she thought the only reason I would make the effort to get dressed as if I had somewhere to go.
Self-care is the same way. How will our children ever really learn to value themselves and take care of themselves if we aren’t showing them how?
Self-Care and Sleep
Our jobs as SAHMs is to take care of our kids. All Day. Every Day. The only alone time that any of us ever get is when the kids are napping or sleeping at night.
You know what though. I like to sleep. I need sleep. Being a mom is freaking exhausting. Getting enough sleep is an essential part of taking care of yourself as well. I refuse to give up sleep just to make self-care fit into my schedule. Especially while pregnant.
If my kids are asleep, I’m asleep. I am a firm believer that anything that I need to get done CAN be done while my kids are awake.

The benefit of including your kids into your self-care routines is that you aren’t having to wait until they fall asleep. You aren’t sacrificing sleep in order to care for yourself, which seems pretty counterintuitive when you phrase it that way doesn’t it?
There are lots of fun self-care with kids activities that I include my kids in. My newest favorite is teeth whitening with Smile Brilliant. I like the way my teeth look but I’ve always wished they were just a bit whiter. Clearly, I don’t have time in my schedule to be running to the dentist for professional teeth whitening services. I’ve tried the store bought strips before and just kind of felt like I was wearing jellyfish on my teeth.
Smile Brilliant is SO Different. Your welcome package comes with a really easy to use kit to create your own custom molds. You then just send your molds back to Smile Brilliant and they create whitening trays for you.
My daughter thinks my trays are hilarious and is always asking if I am wearing my teeth!
Whitening is super easy too. The solution comes in a little syringe that you just squeeze into the mold, something that my littles always want to help with. You wear them for 45 min to 3 hours and after 7-11 times you can really see results.
There’s not been a huge amount of testing done on the safety of the whitening gel so I did decide to
stop once I found out I was pregnant because I’m a crazy lady like that. However, I am SO happy with the results I was able to achieve with 9 sessions.
I love my new smile and I love the memories that I got to make with my little girls while I was getting it. I would pop in my whitening trays and we would do our hair, paint our nails, do facemasks or whatever other fun girly, pampering we could think of for an hour or so.
Self-care can be done in all kinds of ways. Don’t think it has to be a solitary event! All you need to do is make sure that you are finding a little time to take care of you, even when you are busy taking care of everyone else!
What is your favorite way to take care of mama?
